Iznik Pottery: Iznik pottery, from the town in Northern Anatolia known in ancient times as Nicaea, supplied the Ottoman court with splendid tableware and tiles used to decorate mosques, palaces and other buildings. Representing one of the best art forms of the Ottoman period, Iznik pottery contains purely Turkish motifs as well as elements from blue-and-white porcelain imported from China. In the 15thC only monochrome cobalt blue was used, but eventually, under the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent in the 16thC Iznik pottery was easily identified by the brilliant combination of blue, turquoise, green and relief-red. Widely appreciated beyond the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire, Iznik pottery was much in demand in Europe, to the point that many famous 19th century potters did not refrain from producing imitations, even though the peak of this art form had been reached two centuries before. Ours magnificent replicas of this Ottoman art form at its very peak. Moreover, due to modern techniques used by the artists, our dishes and tableware can actually be used for serving food, and not merely as beautiful decorative objects.
